Maned Wolf - Diet (Availability & Nutritional Value)
While researching the maned wolf, I was delighted and surprised to find that about 50% of the diet is composed of plants (24). The plants in their diet vary as they are opportunistic eaters and fluctuations are seen through the seasons (5). Plant material included the maned wolf fruit (Solanum Lycocarpum), Annona spp. plants, dwarf coconuts (24), grass leaves (6) and many others. The other 50% of the diet is made up of small mammals (mostly Clyomys sp. and Necromys sp.), armadillos (5,13), and small insects/arthropods (such as beetles) (5,6).
Wolf’s fruit, and small mammals make up the bulk of their diet (5,13).
Wolf’s fruit, grass leaves, and small mammals (6) are mostly consumed during the dry season while other fruits, such as Annona spp. (1), and insects/arthropods (such as beetles) are mostly consumed during the wet season as they are more abundant in the wet season (5,6).
